Yoga Poses to Build Muscle
When you think about building muscle you naturally think about lifting weights and pumping iron. I mean, of course, nothing really works as well as lighting weights when it comes to building muscle and getting a chiselled body.
But not everyone will have the strength nor the time to go to a gym 3 to 5 days a week, given everyone’s hectic lifestyle. At such a time we require something quick and easy.
Yoga is a great way to build muscle. Building muscle with Yoga is a commitment. You will need to stick with it even when the going gets tough to extract the real benefits of Yoga. You will not only look and feel great but will have built a considerable amount of raw strength in about a year’s time.
There are many poses that one can do to get stronger and build muscle but it is always better to start out with what your body can handle. Let’s look at a few asanas that you can do even as a beginner.
1. Tree Pose
- This single-leg standing asana helps the body root through the ground and
establish balance. It works all the little stabilizer muscles around the ankle,
knee and hip of the planted leg while giving the other leg a good stretch. To
keep your body steady from beginning to end, the core must remain engaged and
this helps build core strength too.
2. Bridge
Pose - This pose requires the body to squeeze through the legs, glutes, core
& lower back and is a great lower body strength building exercise. In
addition to its muscle-building benefits, bridge pose also opens up the chest
and shoulders, while giving the spine and hip flexors a good stretch. An
all-round basic asana you can’t afford to miss.
3. Chair Pose - Similar to Bridge Pose, the Chair Pose engages the legs and glutes and draws out the core and lower back muscles to build a strong core and lower back that can hold you steady. With your feet together, you will feel your quads and glutes burn as your legs support your weight in this narrow-stance, half-squat position.
